Archway Cookies Files For Bankruptcy

Manufacturing.Net - October 07, 2008

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) -- The maker of Archway and Mother's cookies has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the wake of rising food and fuel costs and plans to end its U.S. operations.

Archway & Mother's Cookie Co. Inc. on Monday announced the filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware for its Mother's Cake & Cookie Co. and Archway Cookies LLC subsidiaries.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports the announcement came three days after the company sent notices to the cities of Battle Creek and Ashland, Ohio, stating that operations in those cities would close.

Archway had its headquarters in Battle Creek and a plant in Ashland.

Spokeswoman Meaghan Repko says the company's Kitchener, Ontario, manufacturing plant was not part of the bankruptcy filing.

End of an Era  10/7/2008 1:00:00 PM
It's a shame Archway couldn't have found a buyer; they make good stuff. I guess that's the end of the "Famous Ashland University Chocolte-Chip Cookie" they always handed out to prospective students. Another reason I'm sorry to see this is that my wife has relatives working in the Ashland facility. Being a smaller, farming-based community, it looks like the workers will probably have to commute or move now. Mansfield is the closest city of good size, but manufacturing is low there, too.
oh no!  10/7/2008 1:31:00 PM
They made the BEST Oatmeal Raisin cookies EVER! What am I going to do? I guess I'll have to lose weight...
Re: End of an Era  10/7/2008 2:08:00 PM
Good memories, nothing like driving past the factory in Ashland on a warm afternoon, with the smell of fresh baked cookies in the air.

i bet they would not ever use melamine-tainted milk as an ingredient, either ... watch out for Chinese imposters, now.
Layoffs  10/7/2008 8:25:00 PM
They do make good cookies... I'm not thinking about the food, but rather the people who will not be able to buy any...
Outsourced  10/12/2008 5:18:00 AM
Wake up folks !!!! This is another company that left American workers high and dry !!! Guess what .. they moved these jobs to Canada!!!! They just legally said up your America .. They moved Mothers Cookies too. Boycott them ...

I am really disappointed that this company has out-sourced jobs that are badly needed in this country. I will not be purchasing this product anymore. I now look at what I am buying, and if it is not made inthe USA, I don't buy it unless I absolutely have to have it and then I try to find a substitute. If out-sourcing would become taxed, maybe more jobs would be staying in this country and the middle class would have a chance to have a decent life. I believe if we stopped buying imported goods for a while the manufacturers would think twice about sending jobs overseas.

Their excuse about rising fuel costs and rising food costs are just so much 'BS'. Their real problem is executive pay levels and executive who are incredibly stupid and greedy. They should be jailed. This company could survive easily except for executive pay and really stupid processes inside their plant.
Archway bankruptcy  10/14/2008 5:36:00 PM
This is what corporate America has become.Archway was bought by Catterton a company that buy's good companies to only sell their asset's out piecemeal in order to make tremendous profits.in the meantime they leave behind a gutted company, the dedicated employees are let go and they file for bancrupcuy so not to pay their creditors. This practice is common and pure thievery.i know because i was one of hundreds of independent distributors that lost my investment in a route i ran for 16 yrs.becauce they calculatively made the distribution of their product a totally unprofitable venture. In most cases guys stuck it out although hardly paying even their expenses. The company arranged to send their product direct to chain store warehouses therefore eliminating the independent distributor. We all lost substni

It is family lore from decades ago that my cousin Myron and his wife Faith sold their family business for a great deal and founded what became Archway Cookies. Any truth in this? I know Myron died young, but I believe his widow (now remarried to somebody working for Disney in Florida) is still alive. Thanks for your help. I know that I bought Archway cookies for decades in honor of my cousin.
Mothers Cookies  10/16/2008 6:37:00 PM
I thought the future of the company looked bad when I left in 1998. Things only got worse. It's a shame it was poorly managed!
Archway Mothers  10/20/2008 10:35:00 PM
I am sorry to see them go! My company supplied them with those raisins to make the best cookies ever for the last 30 years. Good bye MOM.
Archway Cookies  10/27/2008 7:59:00 PM
I was an ID in Ct for 34 years. I was forced out of my job because I was not paid for 10 straight weeks and that was not the first time they did that.Archway Cookies was so mismanaged that you just knew they would be out of business very soon. They had some rude people when you called and asked where your money was. I don't feel sorry for any of those miserable office staff that got paid every week and us poor ID's who got stiffed but were always given hope with promises and lies.
SCREWING thier distribution chain earlier this year  10/28/2008 6:27:00 PM

Sugar-free cookies were the only good ones around  11/3/2008 1:21:00 PM
can i buy out the last of the sugar free choc chip cookies? They are the only cookies that don't have artificial sweeteners that cause cancer and I always hoped that Archway cookies would be around forever since I can't have any sugar and won't eat that art. sweetener garbage. I am SOOOO upset that they are out. If I had the money I would buy them out and keep it going. Ugh. Seriously, how can I buy the last of the cookies?
Oh I just read the employee comments  11/3/2008 1:22:00 PM
That's awful. What the heck is wrong with employers these days!!!!!!!!
Archway closing  11/20/2008 5:53:00 PM
I LOVE Windmill cookies and so do nine of my ten grandchildren. We dunk them and they are so delicious! I can't believe this news.
Archway Cookies  12/9/2008 10:23:00 AM
My husband and I LOVE the Archway Cookies and bought our usual Christmas ensamble! The Gingerbread are delicious and gone! The Nutty Malted Nougat were opened and a few eaten until I found a HUGE HUNK of BROWN PAPER in my mouth!!!! I thought it looked like a nut on the top of the cookie until the bite I took and started to chew and pulled out that paper!! I called the number on the package with just a recording of their hours (and I was calling at 9:30 AM EST) until I came online and looked up another number called and was told about the Bankruptcy. The lady on the phone said that there was nothing that could be done as everyone had been let go and production had stopped in October and that the Holiday Cookies were made in August and September! How nutty is that?? Well, I am stuck with cookies that I now have to throw away and loose money on too!! I am not going to take the chance of eating the rest of the cookies to see if I find more FIBER from BROWN PAPER!!!! I like my fiber in more tasteful ways! I still have 3 unopened packages (they do not have nuts in them), not sure if we will open and eat them. They are the Wedding Cake, Chocolate Macaroon and Pfeffernusse. May take the chance...But, the Nutty Malted Nougat? They will be TRASH!!!! First time I EVER had a problem with the cookies and I always bought them for the Christmas Season! So sad...........Wish the BBB was reading this! I may call them too!!!! It's not like the cookies are inexpensive!! You pay good money for them.
Archway Cookies  12/11/2008 8:27:00 PM
Having gone to my local supermarket recently I was surprised not to see any Archway displays. I inquired of store staff where I might find them and after a bit of hunting for the right person to get the information was told that Archway had gone out of business. This news had stunned me. Like so many others I had enjoyed the holiday cookie selection and in particular Ruth's Cashew Supreme. That cookie apparently underwent a change and become nutty nugat or the like. I have also been stunned by the many comments of mismanagement. Let me qualify that, stunned at the prevalence of the same across the board in America. I concur that there is a crisis in this country in the area of management. And a crisis of an overarching greed that has destroyed many lives and is the source of extreme economic woes even now. My own company is a case in point and I am looking for new employment. Being a part of the baby boomer generation that grew up in a more idealistic time I am quite disillusioned by my own generation that had fought for equality and for the greater welfare of the many and seems now to be consumed with greed. Shame on us.
In Shock Over No Seasonal Favorites  12/18/2008 9:25:00 PM
I visited six stores in two time zones before I finally learned the truth. I had to ask my daughter and wife to sit down to deliver the news. It's a sad day indeed.
