CHICAGO (AP) -- Boeing Co. said Tuesday its delivery of commercial jets jumped by more than a third in the latest quarter, much improved over the same period last year when machinists walked off the job.
The Chicago-based airplane manufacturer said it delivered 113 planes, up from 84 in the third quarter of 2008, when operations were disrupted by an eight-week strike by the International Association of Machinists.
In the most recent quarter, Boeing said it sold 90 737s -- the company's best-selling jet -- 63 777s, 4 767s and 6 747s.
To date this year, Boeing delivered 359 jets, up from 325 for the first nine months of 2008.
Despite the favorable comparison, Boeing has struggled this year with slumping orders for its jets as the recession dampened demand for air travel and cargo services.
Separately, Boeing reported that it expects to record a charge of $1 billion in the third quarter.
