ArcelorMitall Gets $32M Energy Grant For Indiana Plant

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) -- A northern Indiana steel mill is getting a $32 million federal grant to install equipment that will generate power from a blast furnace's waste gas.

ArcelorMittal will use the Department of Energy grant to install a new energy-efficient boiler at its Indiana Harbor East mill in East Chicago. The boiler will produce electricity and steam on site by capturing gas generated by iron-making operations.

The company says the boiler is expected to help lower energy costs and per ton production costs by using about 46 billion cubic feet of gas that's flared annually.

ArcelorMittal's $32 million grant was the only project funded in Indiana among more than $155 million in projects announced by the Energy Department.

The agency granted money to 41 projects around the country using stimulus funds.

Another Obama Chicago Mob Payback  11/6/2009 4:18:00 PM
The Obama Administration is the MOST CORRUPT administration in US history. Referring to Obama as a criminal and mobster is not fair to criminals and mobsters.

is in Indiana not Illinois. Last time I checked Obama was from Illinois. Texas received the most DOE grant money in the 1st two rounds. I guess Obama must have a big Texas connection.

I don't understand why this was not done years ago. It's hard for me to believe that flairing waste gas is cheaper than capturing it and using is as energy.
