COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A titanium manufacturer plans to build a $422 million facility in South Carolina that will create hundreds of jobs.
The state Commerce Department announced Wednesday that American Titanium Works plans to employ 320 people at its new mill in Laurens County. Titanium has twice the strength-to-weight ratio of steel and is resistant to corrosion.
American Titanium Works officials say the new facility will prepare raw materials and manufacture and test titanium products.
The Chicago-based company also said it plans to hire about 40 engineers to develop titanium prototypes at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research.
Construction at the new facility is scheduled to begin by 2010.
