Airbus Announces Several Orders Of A320 Jet Family

Airbus announced a series of orders for its smaller single-aisle jets Thursday, racking up 80 purchases for the A320 family of short- to medium-haul planes. On its home turf, Airbus so far seems to have the edge over its rival Boeing at the Paris Air Show, which serves as a platform for the sales race between the giants.

EPA Levies $2.5M Penalty Against Cement Maker

The Environmental Protection Agency levied a $2.5 million penalty against a big cement maker and required the company to invest $30 million in pollution controls at plants in nine states alleged to have violated the federal Clean Air Act.

Polaris Recalling About 4,500 Off-Road Vehicles

Snowmobile and ATV maker Polaris Industries Inc. is recalling about 4,500 of its 2011 Polaris Ranger RZR XP 900 recreational off-highway vehicles due to a potential burn hazard. The company said Wednesday that the firewall in back of the driver and passenger seats can overheat and melt.

The Los Angeles Board of Education on Tuesday approved the purchase of $30 million worth of iPads as the first part of a multi-year commitment. It found that the iPad was the least expensive option that met its specifications. The initial order is for more than 31,000 iPads, Apple said.

House Votes To Delay Food Safety Rules

Lawmakers adopted an amendment by voice vote to a wide-ranging farm bill just before midnight that would delay the rules signed into law in 2011 until the Food and Drug Administration conducts a study on their economic impacts. The proposed rules would require farmers to take new precautions against contamination.

Manufacturing in China contracted this month at a faster pace as demand weakened, according to a private survey Thursday, adding to fears about a fragile recovery in the world's second-biggest economy.HSBC said that the preliminary version of its monthly purchasing managers index fell to a nine-month low of 48.3 in June, down from 49.6 in May.

Fed Foresees Lower U.S. Unemployment Rate

The Fed now predicts unemployment will fall to 7.2 percent or 7.3 percent at the end of 2013 from 7.6 percent now. It thinks the rate will be between 6.5 percent and 6.8 percent by the end of 2014, better than its previous projection of 6.7 percent to 7 percent.

Porsche is the top performer in an annual survey of new vehicle quality. J.D. Power questioned more than 83,000 U.S. car owners about problems with their 2013 vehicles in the first 90 days of ownership. Judge Thomas M. Rose of the U.S. Southern District Court of Ohio issued the order Monday. The Hartford, Conn., aerospace company said in a regulatory filing Tuesday that it will appeal the order.
